The prompt today is, “why do you write about health?”.
I started this blog about a year and a half ago because I didn’t know any other Moms of teenagers with Type 1 diabetes, and I was hoping to connect with some. I also hoped that by writing about what we go through because of diabetes I could help other parents in the same situation. I still don’t know if I’m connecting with other parents of teens, but the writing itself helps me, as do the comments that I receive from people with diabetes.
I’m hoping that by doing this ’30 posts in 30 days’ assignment my writing will improve, and also that more people will become aware of my blog so that a give and take can take place. Because as parents of a 16 yr old with diabetes we sometimes feel very alone, and it would be nice to interact with other parents going through the same things that we do.
Another reason that I write is to help people who don’t have diabetes and who don’t know what it’s like, to have a better understanding of what diabetes is all about. There are so many misconceptions out there about what a person with diabetes can and can’t eat, can and can’t do, and what insulin does, and doesn’t, do. The fact that a lot of people believe that you get diabetes from eating too much sugar or from being over-weight blows my mind. I’ll never forget being told by a former friend that my son had ‘used up all of his insulin’ by eating too many sweets, and that’s why he became diabetic! At 13 months? Really?!
So, these are the reasons that I write this blog, why I choose to write about health. Even if no one else ever reads my words, writing them has helped me cope, so that I can be a better Mom to my special guy.
